o you are thinking of buying the Sony A7IV or the Sony Fx30. Let me start of with saying, that both of these camera's are great. If you buy one of these, you're not going to regret it. But there are some differences and for those of you considering this cameras, these differences might be game changers. Let's start with the sensor and image quality.
Sensor & Image Quality
The Sony A7IV has a 33MP full-frame sensor. Which is great for photography and this camera has a great low-light performance. I've used this camera for almost 2 years and it's a very capable machine. You can become a professional photographer with this camera and combine it with video gigs. Most people who are thinking of the A7IV, are probably interested in its combination of both photo and video capabilities. And I can assure you, that if you want to do both, it can do it. But remember, it's not a video focused camera. So there will be a few issues when using this camera as your video cam. And the most annoying being, that it get's too hot. I've had this a few times and I can tell you, you'll be annoyed by it. The camera doesn't have an internal cooling system which the fx30 does have. But the fx30 isn't perfect either.
The FX30 is a great camera. I've used it a few times and the video quality is amazing. But it is optimized for video, so if you want to take photos with it, it isn't great. The sensor is a APS-C 26MP, which gives you a bigger crop factor and it doesn't have a mechanical shutter. So for photography it's not a great buy. The main question is, how big is the difference in video quality compared to the A7IV?
Autofocus & Stabalisation
Almost all high end Sony cameras have great autofocus these days. There is a difference in what kind of autofocus the camera uses tho. The A7IV is equipped with a real-time tracking and Eye AF, while the fx30 is equipped with a more cinematic autofocus with more controlling options. For professionals this might be important, but for the amateur filmmaker it probably isn't. There is also a difference in the stabilization of both cameras. The A7IV uses in-body stabilization and the fx30 active stabilization. The difference? The A7IV uses a technique that stabilizes the sensor which is great for photography and handheld video, and the fx30 uses a technique that applies a crop to the footage, essentially zooming in so that you don't see the shakes. The fx30 works better with a gimbal, and the A7IV handheld.
